JPR's Jefferson Exchange host Geoffrey Riley will focus on media literacy in the modern era at the Community Center, 59 Winburn Way, Ashland, 406 PM on March 10th.
We once had a morning paper on the doorstep and three national newscasts to choose from in the evening, so our news media choices were limited. Those days are long gone, with every person on the Internet capable of presenting themselves as an authority. So how do we, as news consumers, make choices? Stick with the New York Times and NPR, and ignore Axios and Vice? And as we wade into the waters of new media, how do we know which ones to trust, and which to be wary of? Geoffrey will lead a wide-ranging discussion of media proliferation and its benefits (Yay! Diversity of voices!) and its problems (my local paper died).
Geoffrey Riley has been a broadcaster for 40 years now, with experience in radio and TV news and commercial production from Alabama to Oregon. Geoff currently hosts The Jefferson Exchange, a two-hour local talk show on JPR, Jefferson Public Radio (no relation to the center, we're just friends). He and his wife Joi have lived in the Rogue Valley since 1985.
