Why do "smart" people do so many "stupid" things? Keith Stanovich shows that what we generally think of as "intelligence," and how it is measured on tests, fails to include abilities for rational thought--what we might call good critical thinking. Yet these abilities can be identified, examined, and evaluated. Stanovich extends standard models of brain/mind (including the much-discussed "dual systems" model of Kanovich, Haidt, and others) to examine the need to decouple from automatic, autonomous functions before one can genuinely think and reflect.
