The Self Illusion: How the Social Brain Creates Identity 2012. by Bruce Hood. We recently read about meditation and other ways our brains can transcend the illusion of self. In this book, Hood puts together the evidence supporting the claim that the self is an fact an illusion, not reality, including development from childhood and the importance of social ties in human lives.

The Brain Books discussion group meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month, 1:30-3:30 pm, in the Ashland Public Library. Its selections are often of interest to Jeff Center members; the group is open to the public. Discussion leader is Sandra Coyner.
